What we do

PENDULUM ART GALLERY has been in existence for eight years as a private gallery serving other galleries and individual collectors. We are determined to portray African art from an African perspective. We focus on original works of art by young and seasoned artists alike. While we provide a forum for continued renewal of the artist maestro, we also represent a steppingstone for the possible names of tomorrow, as an earnest of our belief in continuity and excellence.

Advisory and Consultancy Services
We also offer advisory/consultancy services to organizations and undertake commissions in all forms of commercial art without being pedestrian. With our vast knowledge of the art terrain in this part of the world, we are able to monitor the art market and determine the true value of an art piece. The gallery also packages salon  exhibitions for company’s end of year anniversary, and also organizes cultural activities for companies.

Development of African Art and Culture
Art scores highly in cultural integration of people in all societies. Nigeria has for years neglected the role of art in social and economic development. This has been part of the misfortune of the country in the last four decades. We at Pendulum believe that art and culture form the live wire of all societies where progress for the future depends on a vibrant heritage.

We understand that art is the key to the development and technological processes as important factors in the eternal reinvention and sustenance of modern society.  It is the prime ingredient that effectively determines the success of the end products of any industrial, technological and scientific process. Its overriding influence is affirmed in aesthetic considerations in many decision-making moments of our lives. Therefore, art goes further than decoration and fleeting aesthetics.

Social Services and Activities

We have formulated programmes that are geared towards realizing our cherished vision with activities involving artists, art collectors and patrons, school children, students, art teachers, diplomats, among others. These activities constantly renew our faith in our mission and in art as a potent, sustainable tool for the perpetuation of mankind.

Publications
The gallery, in association with some Nigerian artists and critics, has initiated a bi-annual journal that focuses on issues in art (internationally). The publication is run by an Editorial Board comprising artists and writers. THE ART FIELD: international review of art and culture focuses on issues in art and culture from Africa and elsewhere. The editor receives submissions all year round, but the acceptance or rejection of manuscripts depend on the judgement of the editorial board and assessors.

The Art Field is published in June and December. The maiden issue is available at  editor@pendulumartgallery.com or artfield@art-in-nigeria.com

Annual Painting and Sculpture Symposium
This is organized on the basis of a workshop. Artists are invited from different parts of Nigeria and beyond to participate in this festival. They are encouraged to work from nature and an exhibition is organized to present the results. The gallery cover a major part of the cost of artist’s participation. Read more...

Annual Lecture Series
The gallery has instituted an annual lecture series. Each year, a reputable artist is invited to speak on any relevant issue of his/her choice. Speakers at the lectures may be Nigerians or non-Nigerians. The lectures are published on the Pendulum website for the benefit of our thousands of friends and visitors. The maiden edition of the lecture (2003) was given on May 24 at the National Museum, Lagos, by Demas Nwoko one of the most revered pioneers of Nigeria’s modernism.

The Pendulum Project for the Amelioration of Mankind through Art
Under this particular project, annual programmes such as exhibitions or workshops are contrived with a focus on issues that border on man’s/people’s situation in society. Within this parameter, issues such as wars, hunger, widowhood, urban problems, violence, bad/good governance are addressed as possible themes for exhibition/discussion).

In this regard, Pendulum collaborates with reputable artists and organisations in formulating relevant programmes (lectures, symposium, exhibitions) in the pursuit of this particular aspect of our programme. In the recent past, such collaboration has been made with The Pan-African Circle of Artists (PACA), The Art Republic, Alliance Francaise, Enugu among others.

We would be glad to partner with other well-meaning organisations and individuals in developing and executing projects which can extend the frontiers of art in Nigeria and the world.
