OLOKOTO: SONGS OF
CHIMA
It is
fairly common practice, when proposing a toast to someone's health that
prayer is made for longevity and prosperity. Often, such moments are laced
with prophetic calls for honour and glorious achievements for the
individual's children.
Olokoto,
songs of Chima, today reflects the multitude of exceptional attributes
bequeathed by Eze Chima, Onitsha ancestral father, to his dynasty and
offsprings.
The
season is one in which official selfindulgence have created apathy and deep
disillusionment amongst the citizenry. I therefore see, in Olokoto, a
convergence of something positive, a cultural progression and mental
renaissance so needed in Nigeria.
The
gathering hall of Eze Chima will indeed bustle with accolades, as
Umuezechima from all works of life meet to showcase exceptional mettle and
distinguished career achievements in this premiere outing of Olokoto.
Pendulum
Art Gallery is indeed supportive of any process that is conceived to foster
eternal brotherhood, peace and goodwill. The quality of Jurors for the
exhibition obviously adds credibility and deserved prestige to the
curatorial process itself. The carefully selected Jury includes a reputable
Art critic, a major collector, and renowned artists, amongst others. Their
collective pedigree is not surprisingly, well reflected in the quality and
strength of works selected.
I feel
singularly honoured therefore to play host to this celebration of Onitsha
Ado art, via the works of these painters and sculptors.
