Profile

One of the first generation artists of the Nigerian art genealogy. Ben Enwonwu pioneered a creative career whose legacy has enriched and projected Nigerian art. His earliest art education was under the pre-independence British Art teacher, Kenneth Murray. He later went abroad where he furthered his formal art education in London and the United States. On completing his art education he returned to teach art in Nigerian Schools and was privileged to serve as the art adviser to the Federal government. A prolific painter and sculptor, Enwonwu’s realistic style was oftentimes adapted to indigenous themes. His works adorn several key architectural landmarks in Nigeria.
