Born on the 30th of May 1959, Ekwenchi studied Fine and Applied Arts at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu. He has been lecturing there since 1988.

Ekwenchi feels very strongly about the role that an artist should play in national development especially in righting the wrong in his country, and the world in general. He practices both sculpture and painting with equal proficiency and creative zest. In his paintings, he evokes the nostalgic and the erotic while maintaining a palette of earth colours, especially yellow ochre. The forms of his sculptures are treated as if the work has two faces-frontal and back views. The sculpture techniques are a fusion of traditional sculpture technique and style with surreal contortions of the anatomy. The surface of his canvas is etched with textures of light and shades
