Profile

Sussane Wenger was born in Graz, Austria in 1915. Her migration to Nigeria in 1950 did a lot to affect her Austro-Swiss identity, for having Nigeria; she assumed a socio-cultural and religion affiliation with the Yoruba tribe.

She settled in Oshogbo and eventually became a priestess of Oshogbo traditional shrines. According to Wenger, this experience of being Yorubanized liberated her talents and took them to ritual level where art leaves it conventional confines and merges with the natural and supernatural forces of life.

She lives and works in Oshogbo where her career has continued to inspire a number of other artists. Her works are widely acclaimed and exhibited in Nigeria and abroad.
