Tola Wewe was born at Okitipupa Ondo State, Nigeria in 1959. He graduated from University Of Ife in 1983 with a specialized degree in painting and in 1986 he finished a master’s degree course in Visual Arts at the University of Ibadan. His style draws from the Ona symbols of the Yoruba and his themes project traditional lores and myths of his native Yoruba. Wewe’s works are widely acclaimed for their originality, simplicity, surface texture and attractive colours.

He is a full time artist based in Lagos where he has held several exhibitions. His shows abroad include Die kraft der Farte held in Germany in 2002.
